Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position on atomistic simulations of irradiation effects in nanostructures. The project is to be carried out at University of Helsinki, Finland.

The position is initially for 2 years with a possible extension for another year.

The successful candidate is expected to start between March and July 2011.

The salary range is 3000-3500 Euros/month.

Further information can be obtained from Dr. Arkady Krasheninnikov

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position on atomistic simulations of irradiation effects in nanostructures. The project is to be carried out at the Department of Physics, University of Helsinki, in close collaboration with the experimental ion-beam group at the Department of Physics and several transmission-electron microscopy groups in Japan, France and Germany.

The aim of the research project is to simulate impacts of energetic ions and electrons into carbon and inorganic nanostructures and understand at the microscopic level their response to irradiation, which can be quite different from that of the bulk counterpart of the nanosystem. The electronic and mechanical properties of the system with irradiation-induced defects will be studied as well. More information relevant to the project can be found in the recent publications of the group (which at the moment consists of Docent (adjunct professor) Arkady Krasheninnikov, Dr. Jani Kotakoski and two students):

The applicant must hold a Ph.D. degree and have a strong background in first-principles electronic structure calculations and theoretical condensed matter physics. Previous experience in electronic transport calculations and molecular dynamics simulations is a bonus.

The position is initially for 2 years with a possible extension for another year. The successful candidate is expected to start between March and July 2011. The salary range is 3000-3500 Euros/month (prior to taxation) depending on the qualification of the applicant and his/her performance, in accordance with the University of Helsinki salary system.
